Meet Joshua Marshman
Hello, I am Joshua Marshman, Co-Founder and Director of Projects at 5050Projects. When I joined the company in 2015, I had a full time job working as a youth director at my local church and actually worked for 5050 on the side during my "free time"; as if I had any real free time. I would work 40-60 hours a week between events, meetings, counseling sessions, ect. and come home to my parents house before being able to sit down and start working on what needed to be done. Often I would start working on tasks required for the small company after everyone else went to bed around 11:00pm and found myself staying up until 1:00 or even 2:00am just to get everything done.
As exhausting as this double burning candle was, I knew I wanted to try my hand with a socially conscience company. I felt that there had to be a way to connect business and doing good. TOMS Shoes was founded in May of 2006 under the same very principle; "Make Something Good, that Does Good". The founder of TOMS, Blake Mycoskie, wrote a book that explains it well called, "Start Something That Matters". He talked about before TOMS started and that the efforts of his life had really culminated up to nothing influential at that point. Sure there was a little money here and a little money there, but he didn't feel like any of it really mattered in the grand scale of life. So when the opportunity to start TOMS Shoes literally fell at his feet, he began to see a glimmer of hope. He has since worked his butt off to grow the foremost socially responsible company, based on a One For One model. Buy a pair of shoes, give a pair of shoes... to someone that needs a pair of shoes.
This story of building a life around doing something that matters inspired me. I have a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, but my life was changed when I spent two months in Nicaragua the summer after I graduated. Working in the slums of the local barrios opened my eyes to a new reality of the world around us. I spent the next 3 years traveling to over 25 different countries and living with people in all kinds of various living situations. I have walked miles down the street with boys and girls to get clean water, I have visited the broken down hospitals where local dread to go, and I have sat holding the hand of many hopeless individuals. All of these things have combined to bring me to this point in my life; a point where my life is now devoted to "Make Something Good That Does Good."
Here is to a brighter future!
